The houses are mainly 3 bedroom
Victorian Terraces. The odd exception being by courtesy of Adolf, or
developer.
In the main, the original terraces are intact, with enough
original features to identify their Victorian legacy, offering a
bit of solid character to the place. Inevitably some properties are split into apartments or flats, but most properties,
if not used as a
private residence by the owner, are shared houses used by those being educated. These are
largely true to their original layout inside, with the properties offering a fair side garden, for plants, sheds and barbeques
etc.
Practically the area offers a
well serviced and extremely convenient location for the would be resident
be they single professional, family or student.
The City centre, The main
University campus / campuses, Railway and coach stations are all in
walking or cycling distance, with the common also near by, for those in
need of open spaces. A convenience for any local Resident o
On the property ladder
the area lies lies
somewhere above the economy of St Mary's and St Deny's but has not quite
the affluence of the properties you might find bordering the Common, which
leaves it in the middle ground of the " Yet to be affluent". Attractive to
small families and the young professional and of course parents looking to
buy Student accommodation for their offspring
The presence of three major
teaching establishments in Southampton of course creates a huge market for
student accommodation for College and University, of which Fitzhugh has
its share, but perhaps not quite the density of say the Polygon Enough of a
permanent residential community existing to provide a stable and reliable
social environment encompassing all generations from Toddler to
Grandparent.
Bedford place, found
at the east end of Fitzhugh provides a remarkable and interesting local
shopping area. The Co-op provides all the general necessities of life. You will also find a comprehensive selection of Takeaways as well as
Fashion boutiques, Art shops, Hair dressers, Pubs, Restaurants and many
more catering for Student and "Ladies who lunch" alike.
It survives as one
of the original local shopping streets of Southampton, with shops such as W.J. French & Sons ( Shoes) boasting a history that stretches back two
centuries and pre-dates the present Victorian houses themselves.
These houses would not
be my first choice for an investment property not being designed with
modern building standards in mind and have already gone through several eras of
modernisation. In their time gas has given way way to electricity, kitchen ranges
given way to
modern cookers and outdoor privies and coal sheds given way to modern bathrooms, but they
do offer a lot of scope as private or family accommodation.
The location is
convenient to all the facilities of the city, without quite the noise and
bustle of living on a major road.
Being near the Docks I suppose
some might want to venture on the idea of accommodation on the water.
Southampton water itself is probably a little busy for this and alas the
Southampton canal was filled in many years ago, so Narrowboats and Canal
barges are not really an option. The River Hamble is probably the best
option , with even the odd Narrowboat being seen, though it did not get
here by means of an inland waterway.
